Feedlogic’s History
The core of Feedlogic’s technology was invented by company co-founder Dave Vaags. He grew up on a farm in Manitoba, Canada and has spent most of his working life in pig farming. In 1990, he purchased his own farrow-to-finish hog operation in Abbotsford, British Columbia and raised hogs there for over 10 years.
As a hog farmer, Vaags was constantly thinking about ways to improve productivity and profitability on his operation. In the late 1990's, he found his version of pig management software was not Y2K compatible. Instead of buying a new version, he wrote his own program.
Around the same time, Vaags started experimenting with innovative ways to feed his pigs. He envisioned a system which could collect better data on feeding activity and also could blend diets. He installed the first prototype in his sow barn in 1997. Over the next few years, he built more prototypes, each time making improvements to the design. He also established the software protocol which would be used to control the system.
By 2001, Vaags had made enough progress to make the decision to depopulate his herd and start a company to commercialize his invention. In November 2001, he founded Feedlogic with business partner Drew Ryder.
Today, Vaags still plays a key role in on-going product development while Ryder manages the business affairs of the company.
